Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Choosing Keyword Phrases to Target

You need to actively choose the search phrases you wish to target.

Less popular search phrases are easier and can bring targeted traffic to your website.

Need some keyword ideas?

Search phrases or keyword phrases are simply the words you type into a search box to search for relevant websites.  They can be anything from 'aardvark' or 'what is an aardvark?' to 'website design in Illinois' or even '1969 ford mustang 427 cobrajet'.

We start by choosing some of the phrases you would like to show up for in the search engines.  Your business name, website subject, products , information subjects, whatever you would like to show up for in the search engines.  Next we run these keyword phrases thru some tools such as at Wordtracker and Overture in order to expand our phrase list and also to guage the competitiveness and estimate the number of searches performed.

It is usually much easier (and cheaper) to get ranked for 3 and 4 word phrases,  and the trends show that people are increasingly searching with more than 2 words.  We try to target 3 and 4 word phrases that also include the much more difficult 1 and 2 word phrases.

The competitiveness and difficulty of a keyword phrase varies from one to the next so we must also study the search results at the big 3 search engines to decide which phrases to focus upon.

After we have agreed upon the keywords phrases to focus on,  we need to incorporate these into your website in order to optimize it for the search engines.  You'll find out what is involved in the next segment called Search Engine Optimization.
